LOVE VS. DUTY
After King Idomeneo returns to Crete from the Trojan War, the high-stakes consequences of a desperate deal he struck with Neptune for safe passage reveal themselves when he must choose between his own son, Idamante, and the vow he made to the sea god, further complicated as Idamante is loved by both the Trojan princess Ilia and the jealous Greek princess Elettra. But when divine wrath is incurred, Idamante and Ilia prove their worth, prompting Neptune’s mercy.

Originally written for four-handed piano, this 2011 chamber opera for 13-piece orchestral ensemble is based on the 1814 novel by Jane Austen. The narrative follows the impoverished Fanny Price, who is sent as a child to live with her wealthy aunt and uncle at their family estate, Mansfield Park.

The story follows Prince Tamino, who is thrust into a mysterious and shadowy land after a harrowing encounter. Rescued by enigmatic figures, he is soon caught between opposing powers: the alluring yet dangerous Queen of Night and the wise, sunlit ruler Sarastro. Accompanied by the whimsical bird-catcher Papageno, he must decipher who truly represents good and evil in this world of shifting allegiances.
